God’s Free Invitation

Introduction

In 1990, while serving as the pastor of First Lutheran Church, Potter, Neb., and Grace Lutheran Church, Gurley, Neb., I prepared a series of six daily devotions, calling the collection “All Good Gifts: Devotions for the Harvest.” This is the third in the collection.

Reading: Isaiah 55:1-5

“Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the water; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price” (v. 1).

Devotion

Through Isaiah, God calls his people, including us, to come to him, to drink from his free and flowing fountain of living water, to eat from his fee and flavorful table of good food.

God’s invitation call us, returning us to him, restoring our faith, reconciling us with him, and reinstituting us as the people of his covenant.

When we watch prices for food rise almost daily at the stores, we need to be recalled to the One who provides for us and who gives us water, wine, and milk out of his grace and love toward us.

Prayer

Loving God, we often doubt your invitations really are free and your gifts really are gracious. Even so, continue calling us to you; give us what we need to live. Amen.

Ut in Omnibus Glorificetur Deus
