In 1991, while serving as the pastor of First Lutheran Church, Potter, Neb., and Grace Lutheran Church, Gurley, Neb., I prepared a second series of six daily devotions, calling the collection “Baptized in the Name: Devotions for the Harvest.” This is the sixth—and last—in the collection.
“Wash away the sin of all those who are cleansed by this water and bring them forth as inheritors of your glorious kingdom.” (Martin Luther’s Flood Prayer, Holy Baptism, Lutheran Book of Worship, p. 122)
Most likely, we only turn to Revelation at the death of someone for whom we care, because we look to that book for consolation and hope in the reign of God.
But we can also find in Revelation comfort in the midst of our daily struggles, as we hear how others who have died find their places in the divine liturgy of heaven.
This helps us to see that our Baptism has claimed us for a life of worship in preparation for the joyous worship awaiting us in heaven. Our Baptism assures us we are destined for a worshiping community of believers. Until that day, we have been given our congregation as a practice field for worshiping God.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, so that in the end, we may all worship your Father. Give us hope until that day. Amen.
